
The Uganda Prisons Service, in partnership with Justice Defenders and the University of London, hosted a historic graduation ceremony for inmates and staff of Luzira Prisons.
The ceremony held at Uganda Prisons Upper, Luzira, on Thursday 28th November 2024 celebrated the academic achievements of 18 individuals, including inmates, staff, and ex-prisoners, who successfully completed Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degrees.

Justice Musa Ssekaana, the head of the Civil Division of the High Court, praised the program in the Uganda Prisons Service, calling it a significant milestone in the transformation of justice in Uganda.
“Today, I am convinced that we have taken a significant step forward in our education drive. As we all know, education is an inevitable building block for any community and society. It is an instrument and a vehicle for development. This program is a timely reminder for us to reflect on how we utilize our time. I strongly encourage many to take advantage of it for their own benefit,” Justice Ssekaana noted.
Fred Kajubi Kayongo, the Acting Commissioner of Prisons (Formal Education Services) represented the Commissioner General Of Prisonswho praised partners for supporting inmate rehabilitation through legal education.
The Chief Justice of Uganda Hon. Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo in his address said that, “This graduation, is a reflection of the great work, commitment and resources applied by the responsible authorities, their partners and most importantly, you our dear graduands of today. The Prison is doing a noble job, I commend them for carrying on this programme to inculcate in this community a culture of hard work and excellence towards self-help and human rights protection in Uganda.”
